Culture Faith and Interpretation
From The Chosen to Scripture
What Pop Culture Gets Right and Wrong About God’s Elect
Pop culture can serve as a compelling lens to view the Gospel but we must remember that the lens is not the light Scripture alone is the source of eternal truth.
The Power of the Humanized Narrative
The success of Christian media like The Chosen is rooted in its ability to humanize biblical figures Simon Peter is not just a rock he is a debt-ridden flawed fisherman Matthew is not just a tax collector he is a neurotic outcast This artistic license gets something fundamentally right God uses imperfect emotionally complex and often messy people.
This dramatization makes the disciples relatable proving that their struggles doubt pride misunderstanding are not unique to the first century It helps us feel a spiritual kinship with the elect encouraging us to see ourselves in their journey This is a powerful corrective trend against the tendency to place biblical heroes on inaccessible pedestals.
However relational art comes with a risk The moment we add dialogue subplots and emotional depth not found in the Bible we introduce plausible fiction that can be mistaken for divine fact.
Scripture is the menu media is the tempting photograph We must eat the meal not just admire the picture.
The Danger of Emotional License
The primary pitfall of faithbased entertainment is when it becomes the authoritative source of truth rather than a devotional aid This is getting it wrong The writers must invent emotional backstories personal conflicts and character arcs that are not found in the text.
- Fiction Over Fact If a character’s defining trait like Simon’s gambling debt or Nicodemus’s wife is invented the emotional payoff belongs to the filmmaker not the spirit We risk grounding our faith in someone else’s good idea not Gods revealed truth.
- The WateredDown Gospel To appeal to a mass audience pop culture sometimes simplifies complex theological themes or downplays the difficult demanding nature of Christ’s call to repentance and suffering The Gospel is often gritty media can make it too smooth.
- Idolizing the Medium When we spend more time watching a show about the Bible than we spend reading the Bible itself the medium becomes the message Our emotional connection to a fictionalized character can replace a committed disciplined relationship with the Holy Spirit.
Three Keys to a Scripturally Grounded Faith
We are encouraged to enjoy media that points us toward God but our foundation must be the Word Here is how to engage with faithbased entertainment without losing your scriptural footing:
Focus Verse
All Scripture is Godbreathed and is useful for teaching rebuking correcting and training in righteousness.
2 Timothy 3:16
Remember Entertainment can inspire only Scripture can instruct Use the human stories as a bridge but make sure your destination is the unwavering Godbreathed text itself.
