Foundational Doctrine
Are You Predestined or Do You Choose?
A Simple Look at a Complex Doctrine.
This question—Are we set on a fixed path, or do our decisions genuinely matter?—has puzzled believers for centuries. Instead of choosing one over the other, the Bible often presents both as true. Understanding this isn’t about solving a puzzle, but about embracing a mystery.
The Two Sides of the Coin
When we talk about predestination and choice, we’re really looking at two different, yet equally valid, perspectives of reality. Trying to force them into a logical sequence often leads to frustration. Instead, think of them as two sides of a single coin: God’s sovereignty and human responsibility.
Predestination affirms God’s absolute power. He stands outside of time and knows the end from the beginning. His plan is certain, unshakable, and not dependent on our fickle will. This truth provides immense peace, assuring us that our ultimate hope is secured by a powerful and loving God.
Choice (or Free Will) affirms our moral agency. The Bible repeatedly commands us to believe, repent, and obey. These commands wouldn’t make sense if we had no genuine ability to respond. Our daily decisions to love or hate, to follow or stray are real, consequential, and hold us accountable.
“The tension between God’s purpose and our will is not a contradiction to solve, but a profound mystery to live within.”
How to Live in the Tension
We don’t need a complete theological explanation to move forward. Our calling is to hold both truths simultaneously, which simplifies our life into practical action.
- Embrace God’s Sovereignty for Peace: When you face anxiety or uncertainty, remember that God’s grand plan is fixed. This frees you from the crippling need to be perfect or to control every outcome.
- Embrace Your Choice for Action: Since God commands you to choose Him, do it actively every day. Make decisions that reflect your faith, knowing your choices are genuine and carry weight.
- Focus on the Fruit, Not the Root: Stop trying to figure out the exact point where predestination meets free will. Instead, focus on the result: are you bearing the fruit of the Spirit? That is the evidence of your alignment with God’s will.
Our Daily Mandate
The doctrine of predestination is a comfort, not a command. The command is to choose to follow today. The paradox simply means that God’s plan is large enough to incorporate your genuine, heartfelt response. Your choice is real, and it is part of His perfect, eternal design.
Focus Verse
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide.”
John 15:16
Rest in His plan, and move forward in your choice. The mystery holds the peace.
Live with Purposeful Choice.
